Nose

Our Merlot showcases vivid aromas of plum, mixed herbs, boysenberry, mint and cassis on the initial bouquet. An intense and rich sensation of oak, along with herbal notes such as oregano, thyme and dried grass compliment the fruit-forward nose exceptionally well. With more time, notice-able hints of caramel, leather and walnut will add substantial complexity to the aroma.

Palate

The palate is soft and velvety, with an outburst of ripe berry fruit carrying on throughout the finish. The silky tannins and toasty oak will linger between layers of dark fruits in your glass!

Growing Conditions

This wine is a true reflection of what Basel Cellars Merlot should be and expresses the exceptional terroir from Block 5 and 6 at Double River Vineyard. The warm days and cooler nights provided excellent ripening conditions during harvest.

Winemaking

Our Merlot showed balance, finesse and substance in the cellar. It was fermented in small batches which allowed us to have more control and a “hands-on” approach during the early stages of this wine’s development.

Aging

It matured in French oak for 20 months and gained more complexity and structure during this time. Only the best barrels from Block 5 and 6 were selected and blended together for our Merlot.

Food Pairing

This Merlot was made to complement a variety of foods and dishes such as tomato stew, grilled vegetables, Shepard’s pie with lamb or stuffed mushrooms.
