Located in the heart of Walla Walla, Washington, Seven Hills Winery is one of the region’s oldest and most respected wineries. As a fourth-generation farmer who worked alongside his father to plant the famed Seven Hills Vineyard, Founder and winemaker Casey McClellan played an important role in the viticultural history of the Walla Walla Valley appellation (AVA). As a winemaker, Casey has guided Seven Hills Winery, creating wines that are benchmarks for excellence in the Northwest. Since its founding in 1988, Seven Hills Winery has helped to champion the rich diversity of the region, and its potential for producing an array of stellar wines. It has also been part of many firsts for the appellation. In keeping with its focus on Bordeaux-varietal reds, it has bottled more vineyard-designate Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots from the AVA than any other winery.

This wine marks our 16th vintage from the famed Ciel du Cheval Vineyard on Red Mountain, one of the oldest and most proven vineyards in the Northwest. 

This wine is drawn from the winery’s original estate founding Merlot blocks planted by the McClellan family in the early 1980s. 2017 marks the 30th year of making Merlot from these same vines.

McClellan Estate Vineyard is located directly adjacent to our estate SHW Founding Vineyard. The vineyard employs farming methods and special trellising to enhance the flavor, texture and color of the clones planted here, expanding the stylistic range of our Cabernet Sauvignon portfolio. 

Within Washington State, with its Merlot-friendly climate and soils, the Walla Walla Valley AVA occupies a very special place, with just the right amount of warmth and a generous variety of soil types and elevations, coupled with a decades- long tradition of growing great Merlot.

With 30 years of experience as Merlot specialists, working with established, dedicated winegrowers, we've sourced this bottling from a selection of the sweet spots of Merlot terroir, in deep silt-loam soils at mid-elevations around the AVA. All the classic attributes we look for in Merlot are here: lush, ripe fruit, a balanced, succulent palate, and accessibility. We blend in a small amount of Cabernet Franc to accentuate floral notes and bring an intriguing undertone of tobacco and brown leaf.

The wine captures the varietal character of Cabernet Franc while also expressing the vineyards’ deep silt-loam and hillside terroir.

The southern edge of Walla Walla Valley presents an ideal climate for growing Malbec. 

Rosé

We have vinified this entire block of Summit View Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon for several years, and are very pleased with the distinctive nature of Clone 191 on the site. It’s a great example of the excitement and power that comes from matching the right clone with the right vineyard site. 

Planted in 1983, Klipsun Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards on Red Mountain, the smallest AVA in Washington State. Since 1991, we have produced a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the same block, on the windward side of the vineyard overlooking the Yakima River. We find it to be one of the most distinctive sites we have worked with in three decades of winemaking. 

Seven Hills Winery works with all the traditional Bordeaux varietals, including Carménère, the “long lost grape of Bordeaux.” This wine is grown in the southern hills of Summit View Vineyard and the volcanic-laced silt loams of our SHW Estate Vineyard, two of the most intriguing Carménère sites in the Walla Walla Valley. It is always delightful for blending, but as the years have gone by, we have become more and more enchanted with it as a remarkable stand-alone wine. 

Drawn from our estate founding blocks, this Merlot reflects the original vines planted on the estate by Casey McClellan and his father in the 1980s. Having worked with these vines for three decades, we are able to craft a wine that reflects the pedigree of our estate vineyard and the complexity and grace of the appellation. 

It’s rare to bottle Petit Verdot as a single varietal, as it is normally reserved for blends. Sourced from McClellan Estate Vineyard, this wine displays structure, tannin, and vibrant acidity along with dark fruit and savory undertones. 

Sourced from a selection of complementary vineyards, our Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon demonstrates the expressive range and true character of the varietal across Washington State’s best-growing regions. 

Many red varietals thrive in Walla Walla Valley, but Merlot distinguishes itself as particularly striking through the perfect union of land and climate. Drawn from fruit selections that capture the unique character and expressive beauty of the appellation, this classic Merlot presents elegance and complexity.
