chocolate on the finish.
After warmer than average 2012 and 2013 vintages, 2014
in Eastern Washington was one of the warmest seasons in
decades with favorable temperature conditions extending
into fall. Overall, 2014 was a pleasant growing season; ripening was
excellent for all varieties in all locations.
Source vinetard: Pheasant Run vineyard is a small lot vineyard located in
the southern region of the Walla Walla AVA. With mesoclimates ranging from loess soils on gently
sloping hillsides to gravel bottoms of ancient riverbeds,
wines from the unique Walla Walla Valley AVA can be
anything from fine-boned and elegant to broad and stout
in structure. The Spofford silt loam soil at this vineyard site is excellent
for growing grapes because it allows for superior drainage.
Fruit was picked at the peak of ripeness, destemmed,
sorted and placed into stainless steel tanks. A twice-daily
pumpover regime was used to extract color and flavors. When the desired tannin structure was achieved, the wine
was drained away from the skins and placed into half new
oak and half neutral oak for malolactic fermentation.
Aging occurred for 16 months.
